An exhibition and educational program exploring the lessons of the Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disasters opened at Sofia University in the Bulgarian capital. Organized by the Department of Japanese Studies at Sofia University in collaboration with iBoost Entertainment, the project aims to examine the lessons humanity must learn from the two largest nuclear accidents in history.
The opening ceremony featured lectures by Oleksandr Tyshchenko (Alex Luna), Advisor to the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, and Professor Shigeru Yoshida. They were joined by documentary filmmaker Setsuko Kanie, director of Message from Fukushima: Nevertheless, We Continue to Live Here, and Dr. Martin Dimitrov of Sofia University.
Chernobyl and Fukushima remain the only two nuclear accidents classified as Level 7 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES). Alongside Professor Yoshida's photographs, the exhibition also featured works by Ukrainian photographer Vladyslav Krasnoshchok.
Potographer Shigeru Yoshida presented archival footage of the devastating tsunami that struck Japan following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. His lecture addressed the forced evacuation of communities after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, as well as the construction of massive seawalls during the reconstruction process, raising questions about how societies remember and respond to catastrophe.
The event also included a screening of Setsuko Kanie's documentary, "Message from Fukushima: Nevertheless", We Continue to Live Here. Following the screening, Kanie discussed the eighteen people featured in the film and shared moving responses from audiences across East Asia, where the documentary has been widely screened.
The year 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. However, for most of the students in Sofia University's Department of Japanese Studies who attended the event, both Chernobyl and Fukushima belong to history rather than lived experience. The exhibition and lectures therefore attracted considerable attention as an opportunity to introduce younger generations to the often-overlooked realities of nuclear safety and the hidden consequences of nuclear accidents.
Although the participants shared a strong interest in Japan, many were unfamiliar with the television images that were repeatedly broadcast across Japan during the Fukushima disaster, particularly the tsunami and the hydrogen explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Professor Yoshida's presentation provided historical context and enabled the audience to gain a deeper understanding of the human impact of the disaster.
The exhibition also emphasized that many of the lessons of the Fukushima nuclear accident remain insufficiently understood, particularly the long-term environmental and health risks affecting local communities, which continue to be underestimated. It presented medical and radiological evidence alongside the social trauma experienced after the disaster. The research further introduced observations concerning the health effects on children and young people in Japan following the nuclear accident.
Nothing will make us happier than having visitors share their thoughts.
