Japan’s Samurai Foto Collective Debuts in Mexico City
サムライフォト、メキシコシティで初の展覧会開催

Timed to coincide with Mexico’s Día de los Muertos, "Offerings" brings together the deeply personal work of Samurai Foto, a photography collective based in Yokohama, Japan. Through striking, heartfelt images, the artists offer a gesture of friendship—an invitation to connect across cultures through shared experiences of memory, ritual, and the unseen threads that tie us to those we’ve lost.
Each photograph reflects an intimate exploration of the artists’ own histories—moments of love, grief, celebration, and quiet reflection. A crane in flight, the flicker of flames, the stillness of a forest—these symbols speak softly but powerfully to the fleeting nature of life and the beauty found in its impermanence.
メキシコの「死者の日」に合わせて、横浜を拠点とする写真家集団 Samurai Foto がメキシコシティで展覧会「OFFERINGS（捧げもの）」を開催します。本展では、サムライフォトのメンバーが制作した深く個人的な写真作品を通じて、文化を越えた友情のメッセージを届けます。記憶、儀式、そして私たちが失った存在と結びつける目に見えない糸をテーマに、心を込めた写真が展示されます。
それぞれの写真は、愛、喪失、祝福、静かな内省といった作家自身の体験を映し出すものです。飛翔する鶴、揺らめく炎、森の静寂――これらの象徴は、人生の儚さと無常の中に宿る美しさを静かに、しかし力強く語りかけます。

The exhibition has been organized by California-based curator Ann Trinca with Samurai Foto in the hope of building bridges across culture through photography. Trinca has organized numerous exhibitions for museums and galleries including The Great Wave (Bedford Gallery),Creative Attention: Art & Community Restoration (Palo Alto Art Center), and Echoes of Resilience (Harvey Milk Photo Center).

本展は、カリフォルニアを拠点に活動するキュレーター のアン・トリンカ と Samurai Foto の協力により企画されました。トリンカはこれまでに、ベッドフォード・ギャラリー"The Great Wave"、パロアルト・アートセンター"Creative Attention : Art & Community Restoration"、ハーヴェイ・ミルク・フォトセンター"Echoes of Resilience"など、多数の展覧会を手がけています。

About Samurai Foto
Samurai Foto is a collective of fine art photographers based in Yokohama, Japan, which works toward the goal of making a meaningful contribution to society through photography. Founded in 2012, the collective holds monthly workshops locally with invited international experts in fine art photography to foster growth among its members. The collective actively builds connections with key figures in international photography, such as museum curators and festival organizers, to encourage global collaboration and extend its impact beyond Japan. Through these connections, Samurai Foto has participated in prestigious international exhibitions and festivals, including The Rencontres d’Arles Photography Festival in Arles, France, and FotoFest in Houston, garnering worldwide recognition for its members.

Samurai Foto は、横浜を拠点とするファインアート写真家の集団です。2012年に設立され、写真を通じて社会に意義ある貢献をすることを目的としています。毎月、海外からファインアート写真の専門家を招き、メンバーの研鑽の場を設けています。さらに、美術館キュレーターや国際写真祭の主催者といった国際的な写真界のキーパーソンと積極的に交流し、グローバルな協働を推進。これまでにアルル国際写真フェスティバル（フランス）、フォトフェスト（ヒューストン）など、世界的に名高い展覧会やフェスティバルに参加し、国際的な評価を得ています。

Located in Mexico City, SAQ Gallery is a contemporary art space directed by Azalea Aguilar, Sebastian Monjaras, and Luis Fernando Suárez who showcase emerging and established Mexican and international artists. Located in the up-and-coming arts district of Santa María la Ribera, SAQ Gallery is unique in hosting interdisciplinary projects that engage with social, political, and aesthetic themes.

Yohei Sakai
Yohei Sakai is a Japanese singer and choral conductor who began his musical training in Mexico (UNAM) after arriving in 2009 via a government exchange. He later earned degrees in vocal performance (2017) and choral conducting (2019) in Canada, where he founded the St. John’s Gay Men’s Chorus and served as VP of Unison Choruses Canada. Since returning to Mexico in 2022, he founded the Yolizcuicatl Choir and will lead the LGBTQ+ choir VUDI starting late 2025. He also teaches Japanese and previously represented Mexico City in the Mexican Association of the Japanese Language.
境洋平について
境洋平氏は、日本出身の声楽家・合唱指揮者。2009年に政府交換留学生としてメキシコ（UNAM）に渡り音楽を学び、その後カナダにて声楽（2017年）、合唱指揮（2019年）の学位を取得。セントジョンズ・ゲイメンズコーラスを設立し、カナダ全国合唱連盟「Unison Choruses Canada」の副会長も務めました。2022年にメキシコへ帰国後、「Yolizcuicatl Choir」を設立。2025年後半からは LGBTQ+ 合唱団「VUDI」の指揮を務める予定です。日本語教育にも携わり、かつてはメキシコ日本語教育協会でメキシコシティ代表も務めました。
