Profile

I was born in Shiga prefecture in 1958. Since childhood, I have been fascinated by Japanese paintings and woodblock printings. I wanted to express the artistic aspects and I chose photography as the way to express them 10 years ago. Since then I have been creating artworks. Unlike general art photography, I try to fuse Japanese paintings and woodblock printings with my photographic creations. In my artworks, I outlined the objects like Ukiyo-e, and that gave a strong impression and a positive effect, which attracted me so much. I don’t take photographs with realism but I’m pursuing a new possibility of art expression.

Projects

Excessive human activities have destroyed nature. And I feel sad and painful for it. In Japan we have survived through a lot of natural disasters in a long history. We are in awe of nature and we know the philosophy to live with nature. This is what we learned from these painful experiences. While in nature, we are healed and gain more energy. The wisdom that we learned from the history of natural disasters will help us to overcome human crisis. I’d like to cause a stir among people around the world to raise concerns over the issue of coexisting with nature through my artworks.

Spirits dwell in things /
There is a Gogatsu Ningyo, a samurai warrior doll in my house. I feel that a spirit lives within the doll. My family and I have wished for a healthy growth of our son, and I strongly think that those prayers for him are dwelling in the doll. Things what I put my thoughts into gradually become my guardian gods, and give me a peaceful mind. Now I know that there are a lot of guardian gods by my side.

Reflection of my state of mind (2021- ) /
Anxieties stay in my heart. I feel repulsive and distrustful of those who never stop harassing others. I fear for the future. Maybe I’m not the only one who feels like this. When I feel uneasy, I put myself in nature. Nature cures me whenever I go there. Trees are watching me gently, keeping the right distance from me. Trees that have lost their leaves in winter and become like blood vessels, pour warmth into my aching heart.

Reflection of my state of mind -II (2022- ) / 心模様のリフレクション -II(2022- )
I want to get my dreams back. And I want to recover my spirit. People let their imaginations run freely and positively. I call them “dreams”. A real picture of life breaks my imagination and brings me back to reality. In my artworks, I cut off the reality of things. As animations that are drawn with lines take people across the globe to the world of imagination, I want my artworks to inspire people like that. Trees are represented by lines in my artworks, which relieve me from reality and take me to the dream world.

Simple & Minimal (2018)
There are many people who are tired and weary of their lives. Some people feel exhausted and have hard times to live through. I would like to create artworks which encourage people in such a hard situation by conjuring their imaginations. The expression of the reality blocks people’s free imagination. In my artworks I cut off the reality of things and I make them simple like Ukiyo-e. This artwork is a story of someone’s dream, which a person in a hard situation becomes encouraged and starts little by little to take steps forward.

God's Silent Messengers (2016) /
Among the Shinto-shrines, there are many places that enshrine familiar animals as messengers of God. They stand silently near the entrance to the shrine or the warship hall and protect sanctuary area. As for me, they seem to warn human beings who forget the feeling of awe for nature and cause severe environmental destruction. I think they try to tell us to get back the good balance with nature and human beings for the next generation.

The Wealth, Watched over by FOX (2015) /
The reason why I am strongly interested in "Inari Shrine" is because foxes are enshrined as the god's messengers. There is always a pair of foxes enshrined at the gate of the shrine. They are staring at us with stern faces, threatening intruders.
Since ancient times, many people have visited this shrine to pray for wealth. As the god's messengers, foxes must have watched for human's desire and obsessions with wealth. Foxes' faces seem as if they reflect human's greediness like a mirror.
