Hiroaki Hasumi

Hiroaki Hasumi ⁄

Profile

Hiroaki Hasumi has been wondering what humans are born for. He was a motorcycle test driver and working hard. He thought it was a right job for him. Thanks to the job, he was lucky to find the meaning of his existence from the early days. But there was always danger in this job. He had passed through many dangers on several occasions and had a brush with death. Every time he experienced the danger, some miraculous power occurred and helped him out the danger. And then he heard someone’s voice, saying, “Not now. You still have a lot of things to do. Don’t die.” Eventually, he got an opportunity to see fine art photography. He thought it was a gift from God. It might be his new role to contribute to people with photography and be a chance to move on to the next stage. When he takes photographs, he tries to find hidden spirituality of Japanese in the object. His creative style is greatly influenced by his mysterious experiences which he had been through.

Projects

A new coronavirus has plunged the world into panic since the end of 2019. The world was disconnected, and at times, society was filled with great sadness and anxiety. In this situation, Hasumi thought about what he should do as an artist. He read the messages left behind by our ancestors, such as Japanese traditions, history, and legends, with a modern sense. He concluded that it is important to believe in and imagine a bright future. This future is not one of material wealth, but one that comes from a mind that is free from preconceived notions. He hopes that his work can provide a hint for the renewal of the world.

Samadhi(2019-)
Kare-sansui or dry landscape garden is the Japanese traditional gardens, which only uses rocks and white sand to express mountains and water abstractly. While Hasumi Hiroaki was sitting down in front of the garden, he was led to the deep world of meditation and filled his imagination. Then he realized that Kare-sansui can release us from the sufferings of the material world.

SAKURAISM -with Fukushima- (2019- )
In 2011, Hiroaki Hasumi visited Fukushima to see the old cherry blossom. This place was just only 50 kilometers far from the nuclear power plant meltdown. Surprisingly, there were so many people came to see the cherry blossom. He felt special power of cherry blossoms at that time. Cherry blossoms never fail to bloom in spring after the severe winter. People might get the courage to survive from the cherry tree. Now Hiroaki Hasumi is convinced that Fukushima will recover from the devastating earthquake as long as the cherry blossom stands there.
