Our director, Ogawa exhibited his folding screen style art works. It took 7 years to finish.
今回の写真展で展示されたSAMURAI FOTOのディレクターでもある小川さんの屏風作品。これをつくるのには7年の歳月がかかっているという。

There are people who don’t print their pictures. It is because they just take many pictures but have no good pictures to print. You can never make the art works if you don’t print at all. Your photography skills will never get better as well.
プリントしない人はプリントする写真を持っていないから。たくさん撮っているだけで作品になっていない。それだと写真は上手くならない。

See the object, feel it with your heart and take time to take a photograph. If you take a picture quickly, people would take a quick look at your picture. If you take an hour for taking a picture, people would take their time for seeing it.
まず目で見て、心で感動して、時間をかけて撮る。ちょっと行って撮ったものはちょっとしか見てくれないが、一時間かけたものは一時間かけて見てくれる。

“When the snow melts, it doesn’t become water but spring has come.” When Ogawa takes a photograph, he always uses all of his five senses with all his efforts and thinks of the photo image.
「雪が溶けたら水になるのではなく、春になる」というように五感を使った渾身の一枚を撮るようにしている小川さんは撮影の時点でプリントまでを想定している。

While he was taking photos of the wave with slow shutter speed, he wondered something was missing. Then the thunder started rumbling and after that, the rainbow appeared. He took a very long time for taking this picture, and he wanted to print it.
波をスローシャッターで撮っていたが、何かが足りないと瞑想していたら雷が鳴り、その後に虹が出た。すごく時間がかかったが、だからこそプリントしたくなった。

This is a picture of an apple. He got the apples from his friend in Fukushima prefecture. You can start taking pictures with small object like this apple. And your photography skills will get better. The more you print, the better you can get.
福島の方にいただいたリンゴをプリントしたもの。最初はこうした小さいものでもいいので、「作品をつくったらプリントする」を繰り返すことで写真は上達する。

1. Enjoy the photography and your life.
2. Have a goal.
3. Think of your theme/ what is your message.
4. Think what you want to make and make an effort for the work.
5. Think of the print paper and the size of your art work.
What Ogawa values the most for making art works is to study the details for the objects before shooting and to print the photograph after shooting. Study and act, and you should never give up if you want to make a good art work. This is what he believes.
作品づくりで小川さんが大切にしていること。撮影前にもさまざまな勉強をし、必ずプリントする。いい写真を撮るには「勉強して、行動し、諦めない」ことだという。

The photo of the blue rose; it became a trigger for his making artworks. As he really wanted to make the artwork with this rose, he learned retouching technique all by himself and tried to print over and over again.
小川さんの作品制作のきっかけとなったブルーのバラ。どうしてもこれをつくりたいと思ってレタッチも独学ですごく勉強し、プリントを繰り返した。

The artwork of Pierre-Joseph Redaute style photography; He took a long time for making one artwork and made 400 artworks of the roses at the end.
次に取り組んだのがピエール・ジョセフ・ルドゥーテのバラの図譜に似せた作品。一点に相当な時間をかけるとともに合計400点も制作した。

For improving your skill of photography, you should print your picture and put it in your room. Then you’ll see what really suits you.
自分が撮りたいもの、つくりたい作品を知るためにもプリントして自室に飾ることだという。自分にとって心地よい写真は何かが見えてくるそうだ。

Ogawa found the pastel photography is the best for him. Strong black color in a black and white photograph made him tired, so he created his artworks like Pierre-Auguste Renoir picture.
小川さんにとって心地よいのはパステル調の写真だったという。モノクロでも黒を締めたプリントは飾っていると疲れたので、ルノワールのように墨抜きにした。

This is the data of his artwork, SAKURA. They are consisted in pairs and there are 12 pairs. You can’t check the details just by looking at the monitor.
桜の屏風作品のデータ。じつは対になったもので、このシリーズは12個ある。モニターだけではスケールはもちろんのこと、いろいろと確認できないことが多い。

This is one of Ogawa’s artworks, Red and white plum picture. It’s not as big as a folding screen artwork. You’d better print out your pictures. Then you’ll see what you want to do with your picture.
屏風作品の一つである紅白梅図。屏風ほどではないにしろ、大きい作品ほどプリントして毎日見ているとどこをどうしたいのかが見えてくるからプリントは要だという。

Many of SAMURAI FOTO members use CANNON printer, imagePROGRAF PRO-1000. Ogawa uses PRO-4000, which supports B paper size 0 (1,118mm). If you make the same setting and use the same paper, your photograph will be finished in the exactly the same. This is a good point of this printer.
SAMURAIメンバーの多くが使用しているキヤノンimagePROGRAF PRO-1000。小川さんが所有しているのはB0ノビ（1,118mm）サイズ対応のPRO-4000。同じ設定で、同じ用紙なら同じ色に出る。このメリットは、他のところのプリンターでも同じになるということだ。

If you want to print in a large size paper, I recommend you to go to ‘TOKYO LIGHTROOM’. You can choose the paper and bring your own paper as well. It’s a pay-by-the-hour style and anyone can use casually. Try to print with your printer PRO-1000 at home and then try it with the printer PRO-4000. Your print will be done exactly the same color.
大判プリントをしたい方におすすめなのが、 「TOKYO LIGHTROOM」。 用紙も選べ持ち込みも可。時間貸しで気軽に利用できる。 自宅のPRO-1000で色を試し、ここのPRO-4000で大判で出力しても色が同じになるというメリットがある。
