Expressing the feeling of good old days of Japan in Wet Plate Photograph

Everett Kennedy Brown is a photographer, a director of SAMURAI FOTO and a Japanese culture researcher. He has lived in Japan for 25 years since he came over Japan as a journalist. He has been working on wet plate photography for 10 years to express the feeling of good old days of Japan.

The technique of the wet plate photography was invented before Meiji era, but a dry plate was popular at that time. Everett thinks that the wet plate photography is a perfect way to express Japanese old good days.

Before shooting, you need to make a wet plate negative. You have to develop the photograph before the plate gets dry. So Everett uses the portable darkroom tent. It’s difficult to see if the work is a success or not until the development is done. Everett goes on his gut feeling all the way of the process.

Everett’s camera is made to order to imitate the camera of end of Edo Period. It has two kinds of lens; for portraits and for landscapes. He likes the portraits’ lens because the portraits come out with the blurry and look nice.

He tries to take a photo under the natural light as far as possible. When the picture is taken inside, the camera’s shutter is opened for 15 minutes or so. As he doesn’t use an action meter, all he relays on is his feelings. Now it’s been for 10 years since he’s started wet plate photography, there were a lot of failures.

This is a photo of one of the court noble descends. Everett uses 4 kinds of glasses as wet plates. He uses the same chemicals as Edo Period.

The wet plate photography is influenced by temperature, humidity and natural conditions. And it sometimes causes failure but he always makes use of those experiences to the next step. After failure, he clears his mind and tries again to take a new photograph.

This is a photo of the hand of Miko or shrine maiden. It is hard to express whiteness in wet plate photography. As the photograph isn’t taken well under the direct daylight, he asked the model to stand in the shade of a tree. It’s difficult but important to see how and where the light comes. The forest absorbs the light and the seaside reflects the light.

He made a dirty glass with chemicals purposely. He wanted to show the sly part like this above. In Shodo or Japanese calligraphy, there are 3 kinds of font types, called Shin (formal), Gyou (semi-formal) and Sou (informal). As Everett thinks the photography the same as Shodo, he thinks which type would suit his image when he faces the object.

The failure and the fortuity can be utilized in wet plate photography.

Everett took this photo one month later of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. It took a whole day to shoot this photograph. Even though he was carefully for making negatives, the photo came out with some impurities in the sky part. But he got to think it nice because this part seemed to be like a radiation.

When he developed the photo in the darkroom tent, it started blowing and raining. The raindrops wet the glass. First he thought he failed to develop the photo and got disappointed with it. But soon he changed his view point of it that the rain drops on the glass seemed like stars. He remembered that the seafaring people could see stars even in the middle of the day. Then the photo turned to be a great success and he was happy with it after all.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sankei Hara who created Sankeien garden. Everett loves this garden because he thinks it has a real Japanese spirit than Kyoto and Nara. Sankeien has a Japanese tea ceremony room and he had taken photographs of flower arrangements, made by Sacho Fujiwara, a head master of Kajinomiyagoryu throughout one year there.

This is one of the photos of them. It was taken with the natural light coming from the other side of Shoji, a sliding paper door. It took 12 minutes of the exposure. It sure was a hard work to take a photo but it was worth taking.

This one was taken under the natural sunlight but Everett tried to show it as if being taken in the moon light. And he made it a great success. He is a real pro photographer.

While he was thinking of the seafaring people, he succeeded in showing the rain drops to be like stars in the sky in his photograph. He doesn’t know if it is a chance or a necessity. The most important thing in photography is to take things as they are and make the most of them.
