Andrey Martynov is a Russian curator, who has planned and held a lot of art exhibitions in various countries. He curates many photographers from the already-famous-photographers to the unknown photographers. Some of the unknown photographers came to attention after the exhibition. Thanks to Andrey, we could join some photo exhibitions. In the seminar, he told some tips for making an opportunity in photography. We enjoyed listening to Andrey’s actual-experiences as a curator.
アンドレイ・マルティノフさんはさまざまな国で多くのアート展覧会を企画し開催してきました。展覧会で取り上げる写真作家にはすでに有名なアーティストもいますが、アンドレイさん自らが見つけてきて展覧会を開いたことによって知られるようになった写真作家もいます。SAMURAI FOTOメンバーもアンドレイさんによっていくつかの展覧会への参加を実現していただきました。このようなきっかけをつくるためにはどうしたらいいか。アンドレイさんがこれまで行なってきた展覧会のお話などを通して語っていただきました。

He has organized more than 250 art exhibitions in various countries not only in Russia but also in France, Japan, and Germany and so on. Before he became an art director, he was an oceanographer. When he was young, a Russian photographer, Vadim Gippenreiter was his favorite. He also liked Japanese photographers, Moriyama Daido and Hosoe Eikoh and Japanese writer, Akutagawa Ryunosuke. He said he had a strong longing for Japan.

You need to think how to sell your artworks at a gallery.
Levall Art Gallery in Novosibirsk was Andrey’s first work place as a curator. It was a unique private gallery and compared to art museums, he could organize exhibitions more freely. But the exhibitions had to make profits. Therefore, he planned not only the usual exhibitions but also the international art festivals such as ‘Different Dimension’ and ‘ariGma’. Many photographers around the world joined and the exhibitions became big events for them. Since 2006, he has organized big exhibitions once in two years.

ギャラリーは作品が売れるための工夫が必要
アンドレイさんが最初にアート関係の仕事に就いたのはノヴォシビルスクにあるLeVall Art Gallery 。ロシアの中ではユニークなプライベートギャラリーで美術館よりも自由度が高かった。だが、このようなギャラリーで展覧会をする場合には「お金の取れる展示」をすること。つまり「作品が売れる」必要がある。そのため、アンドレイさんは通常の展覧会だけでく、”Different Dimension" や”aniGma”などの国際フェスティバルを企画して、オーストラリア、ベルギー、イタリア、日本、スイス、台湾、アメリカ、スペイン、韓国、アメリカなどの多くの国々の写真家が参加するビッグプロジェクトなどを開催した。2006年からは2年に一度大きな展覧会も開催し続けている。

Make a solid relationship with people and expand your connections.
If you curate a big art exhibition, it might be possible to collect a lot of people who purchase the artworks. Although the larger the event become, the more money you need. You also need the help and cooperation from big art museums. For inviting many photographers/artists from various countries, you need to go to each country’s embassy and ask for cooperation in various things such as staying fee and transportation fee. Andrey said that he had managed a billion dollar budget as a general director once. Money-related matters were necessity, of course, but he learned that it was important to strengthen a relationship with people as well. Photographers won’t come unless the relationship is strong. You need to use a lot of energy for collecting photographers from the world but it is worth it. He could expand connections with many people around the world. Now, as a person in charge of contemporary art in Moscow, he has a lot of connections with many artists in various genres.

人間関係を強くして、繋がりを広げる
ビッグプロジェクトを行なえば、作品を購入してくれる可能性のある多くの人を集めることができるが、プロジェクトが大きくなるほど開催にはお金が必要になる。会場となる大きな美術館の協力も必須だ。また、さまざまな国から写真作家(フォトグラフィック・アーティスト)を呼ぶためにはその国の大使館に行って、彼らの交通費や滞在費などの協力を仰がなければならない。アンドレイさんはゼネラル・ディレクターとして億単位の予算を管理したこともあるそうだが、そのときにアンドレイさんが感じたのはお金関係のことはもとより、人間関係を強固にしなくてはならないことだったという。作家たちも人間関係が強くないと来てはくれない。いろんな国の作家たちを呼ぶにはエネルギーがいるが、そこからさらに多くの国や写真作家たちとの繋がりができた。そうして、現在のようにモスクワでのコンテンポラリー・アートの窓口として、いろんなアーティストと関わるようになった。

The encounter with Andrey and SAMURAI FOTO
The first connection with Andrey was at the International Photography Festival in Kazakhstan last year. Our director, Yoshida went there as a guest photographer. Kanie, who went together with Yoshida, showed some artworks of SAMURAI FOTO to Andrey who was also invited as a guest director to the festival. It was no wonder that Andrey was a guest director because he worked with them. Yoshida, on the other hand, had no direct connection with people there. In 2012, Yoshida joined Portfolio Review of FOTO FEST and made a contract with the Lumiere Brothers Gallery in Moscow. The following year, he held a solo exhibition there. One of the organizers of PHOTOVISTA visited the gallery and saw Yoshida’s artworks. The organizer asked Yoshida to join the PHOTOVISTA in 2014. After that, the art director of PHTOVISTA recommended Yoshida for the international photo fest in Kazakhstan. Finally, Yoshida and Andrey could finally meet. These are how it happened. To keep a good relationship with people, you shouldn’t forget “keep-in-touch-mind” all the time. Andrey said he would never forget to contact with friends in overseas every morning. Thanks to Yoshida and Kanie’s effort, members of SAMURAI FOTO joined the photo exhibition that Andrey curated.

アンドレイさんとSAMURAI FOTOの出会い
アンドレイさんとの接点は昨年7月のカザフスタン国際写真祭。そこに吉田繁先生が招待作家として招かれたとき、アンドレイさんも一緒に招かれていて、取材で同行した蟹江さんがSAMURAIのサイトからメンバーの作品を紹介をしたのが始まりだった。とはいえ、ディレクションに協力していたアンドレイさんは招かれていて当然だが、吉田先生はカザフスタン国際写真祭と直接の繋がりはない。その出会いまでにはいくつかの前置きがある。まず、吉田先生が2012年に開催されたFOTO FEST ポートフォリオレビューでモスクワのギャラリーとの契約が決まる。翌年、契約したthe Lumiere Brothers Galleryで個展を開催。そこにロシア南部クラスナダールで開催されている国際写真祭PHOTOVISAのオーガナイザーが見学に来て、2014年のPHOTOVISAへの招待が決まる。その後、PHOTOVISAのアートディレクターによってカザフスタン国際写真祭に推薦されたのである。まさに人との繋がりによって成立した出会いだ。もちろん、それぞれの繋がりを大切にするには常に”keep in touch”を忘れないこと。アンドレイさんも毎朝欠かさずにさまざまな国の友人にメールを送っているという。
そして、いま、吉田先生と蟹江さんが繋いだ接点によってSAMURAIメンバーがアンドレイさんキュレーションの展覧会に参加できるようなったのである。

The Home Page is one of the good tools for disseminate yourself to the world.
Kobayashi Norio is one of the Japanese photographers who Andrey introduced at the exhibition. He is a professor of Musashino Art University in Tokyo. Andrey saw Kobayashi’s artworks “Digital Kitchen” on his homepage. Andrey was so impressed because those artworks completely fit with the time with digital technologies. The encounter with artists and curators like this happens all the time. The reviewers of portfolio review check the photographers’ homepage. Therefore, needless to say, your homepage should be written in English and you have to keep your website maintenances, said Andrey. And he added never forget to check the artworks size and editions. In addition, it’s important to think how you make your homepage unique and make it in your own style. That means, use the internet wisely and think the effective way how to promote yourself. A famous Swedish photographer, Anders Peterson sells his artworks on the Internet. There are artists who take orders from customer through the Internet, it can be said that the homepage is one of the important tools for sales.

ホームページは自分を世界に発信する窓口
アンドレイさんがアートの仕事を始めて以来、さまざまな展覧会にキュレーションしてきた日本人の写真作家に小林のりおさん(武蔵野美術大学映像学科教授)がいる。じつはアンドレイさんが小林さんと知り合ったのはインターネットだ。16年前、小林さんのホームページで”Digital Kichen”という作品を見て、「インターネットやデジタル技術が進んでいる今に合っている」と感じたそうだ。このようにキュレーターが写真作家のサイトを見に来ることはよくある。ポートフォリオレビューを受けたときもレビュワーはその写真作家のサイトを必ず見に来る。そのためには英語のホームページであることはもちろん、サイズやエディション管理もしておいてほしいとアンドレイさんはいう。また、ユニークな見せ方や自分だけのスタイルをつくる。ソーシャルメディアも利用しながら、いかに自分をプロモートするかを考えるべきだという。スウェーデンで有名なAnders Petersen のようにネットで作品の注文が来るアーティストもいるので、ホームページは最も重要な営業ツールであると考えたい。

For Japanese photographers who want to sell artworks….
I heard SAMURI members will sell the artworks in Taiwan. Before that, I recommend you to join Paris Photo. It is the world largest art fair, which holds every November at Grand Palais, near the Champs d’ Elysees station in Paris. 180 famous galleries and 30 book dealers gather there from all over the world. If you want to sell your artworks, you have to make a contract with a gallery in the first place. Joining portfolio review in Arles and Houston would be the best and fast way to meet such curators and make a contract with them. It’s not easy to say what kind of artworks would be sold but I think Japanese photographers are good at making a new style of photography with maintaining the old Japanese traditions. I saw some of your artworks. I was impressed by the latest digital printing techniques, and the analog photography such as platinum printing was also highly esteemed. No matter where you get the chance, always focus on showing your artworks distinctively and express your identities. You should be mentally strong and don’t wait for the chance coming to you but go and get them by yourself.

日本の写真作家が作品を売るためには……
SAMURAI FOTOでは今度、台湾のアートフェアで自分たちの作品を売るそうだが、写真作品を売る方法の一つとしてパリフォト出展がある。バリフォトは毎年11月にシャンゼリゼ駅近くのグランバレ(かつてのパリ万博会場)で開催される世界最大級のアート写真の販売フェアで、世界中から名だたるギャラリー180店と書店30店ほどが出店する。しかし、ここでギャラリーに自分の作品を売ってもらうためにはその前にギャラリーの契約作家となる必要がある。ギャラリーとそういう契約を結ぶには南仏アルルやヒューストンで開催されるポートフォリオレビューなどに参加してきっかけをつかむことだ。どんな作品にしたら売れるのかは簡単にいえないが、日本人は伝統を守りながら色々なアイディアを生み出すのが上手いと感じる。また、デジタルなど最新の技術で制作された作品もある一方で、プラチナプリントなどの昔のアナログ作品も根強く評価されている。どこでチャンスをつかむにしろ、自分のアイデンティティを表現したり、その人だけが持つ個性を表現した写真作家になることを目指すといいと思う。自分を精神的に強くして、いつかチャンスが来るだろうではなく、チャンスが来る前に頑張っておくことが大切だろう。
