About the exhibition

A Japanese photographer, Yoshida Shigeru, had created two projects “Border” and “Seawall”, which he dedicated to people who are still suffering from the tragedy of Fukushima. The exhibition shows his 43 artworks selected from those two projects.

Yoshida Shigeru was distressed by the disaster of Fukushima on March 11th in 2011. He was so saddened to know that more than 20,000 people lost their lives due to the nuclear accident that occurred after the earthquake. Since he has worried about over 100,000 disaster victims who had to evacuate and what would happen to those whose lives were destroyed, he flew to Fukushima.

In Fukushima, he saw people praying toward the sea. Many people’s lives were lost due to the tsunami. But even so, people left behind were praying calmly. It was a shocking but touching moment for him. Then he decided to take pictures of the sea and the scenery around the area. He adjusted the shutter speed to 1 minute, which is the same amount of time as the people’s prayers to the sea. For 10 years since 2011, he has visited the damaged coast in Fukushima, Miyagi and Iwate for shooting. He has observed how the victims’ lives have changed and he has reflected on what he saw there in his own projects.

In 2019, he had started his second project “Seawall”, which is about the Great East Japan Earthquake. He has focused on “Seawall”, which is an engineering structure and seems unique. He has been asking himself what the structures bring to victims, a “ray of hope” or a “symbol of despair”. The Japanese government had decided to build 15 meters high 400 meters long seawall to prevent tsunami damage. Due to the decision, people in Fukushima can’t see the beautiful sea closely anymore. Rather they see the big wall in front of them instead. Is it ok if people’s lives are saved by the wall? What happens to the people’s thoughts? They had lived with the sea for a long time. Yoshida had interviewed victims in Fukushima and expressed their thoughts in his photographs.
