Auckland is located in the northern part of New Zealand’s North Island and is the country’s largest city, boasting the highest population. Auckland International Airport, the largest airport in New Zealand, serves flights from around 30 countries, and it is the only airport in the country with direct flights from Japan.

オークランドは北島の北部に位置しますが、ニュージランド国内最多の人口規模を誇る最大都市。オークランド国際空港も国内最大の空港で約30カ国から飛行機が就航し、日本からの直行便があるのもここだけです。

Silo Park, where many of the invited works for this year’s festival theme “Sustain” were exhibited, is a beautiful park located near Auckland’s harbor.

今年の写真祭のテーマである”Sustain”の招待作品の多くが展示されたサイロパーク。オークランド港近くの美しい公園です。

Hiroaki Hasumi’s project “Lost Forest” was also exhibited on the brick walls along the park. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, many works have been displayed outdoors.

蓮見浩明さんのプロジェクト”Lost Forest”も公園沿いのレンガの壁に展示されました。Covid-19以降、作品の多くが屋外展示となっています。

Since it was an outdoor exhibition, the works were produced using weather-resistant special prints. Ten pieces from “Lost Forest” were on display.

屋外展示のため耐候性のある特殊なプリントで制作されていました。”Lost Forest”は10枚が展示されました。

Although this was Hasumi’s first outdoor exhibition, it felt well suited to this year’s festival theme, “Sustain.” It prompted reflection on questions such as how long such man-made structures can remain sustainable and what happens to them once they cease functioning. The experience felt particularly poignant.

屋外での写真展は初めてでしたが、今回の写真祭のテーマである”Sustain”には合っていると感じました。このような人工物はいつまで持続可能なのか、稼働しなくなった後はどうなるのか。より身につまされる感じがしました。

New Zealand is also a vast treasure of untouched natural landscapes. To the people there, this scene may have seemed unbelievable. The contradiction of promoting decarbonization while engaging in deforestation appeared shocking even from a global perspective.

手つかずの雄大な自然の宝庫でもあるニュージランド。その人々から見たら、これは信じられない光景かもしれません。脱炭素を謳いながら森林破壊する矛盾は世界的に見ても衝撃的だったようです。

Julia Durkin, the founder and curator of the Auckland International Photography Festival, first saw Hasumi’s project at the INDIAN PHOTO FESTIVAL (IPF) in November 2024, which led to this invitation.

オークランド国際写真祭の創設者であり、キュレーターのジュリア・ダーキン（Julia Durkin）さん。2024年11月のINDIAN PHOTO FESTIVAL(IPF) で蓮見さんのプロジェクトを見たのがきっかけで、今回の招待に繋がりました。

We had a meeting with Julia Durkin, during which we also introduced the activities of SAMURAI FOTO. We both agreed to “keep in touch.”

ジュリア・ダーキンさんとはミーティングを持たせていただき、SAMURAI FOTOの活動についても紹介させていただきました。お互いに「Keep in Touch していきましょう」という約束をしました。

Various seminars were held throughout the city. On this day, there was a seminar at the public library titled “Photographers Who Preserved New Zealand’s History.” It seems that great efforts were made to properly preserve the large quantities of old large-format film.

市内各所では数々のセミナーも開催されていました。この日は公立図書館で「NZの歴史を残した写真家たち」のセミナーでした。昔の多量の大判フィルムを健全に保管するために大変なご苦労があったようです。

“Lost Forest” was also featured in the brochures that were distributed free of charge throughout the city.

市内各所で無料配布されていたパンフレットに”Lost Forest”も掲載されていました。

There were also backlit displays that could be beautifully enjoyed at night. In a typically New Zealand touch, the project’s theme was Antarctica.

夜間でも美しく鑑賞できるバックライト付きの展示もありました。NZらしく南極がテーマのプロジェクトです。

This is the exhibition scene at the ferry terminal. The greatest advantage of outdoor displays is that they can be seen by a large number of people.

There was also a unique exhibition held in an old silo.

古いサイロを会場としたユニークな展示もありました。

The reason Hasumi was invited
His exhibition at last year’s Indian Photo Festival served as the trigger, leading Julia Durkin, founder and curator of the Auckland Festival of Photography, to reach out to him and invite his participation.

蓮見さんの招待されたきっかけ
昨年のIndian PhotoFstivalでの展示がきっかけとなり、Auckland Festival of Photographyの創設者であり、キュレーターのジュリア・ダーキン（Julia Durkin）さんからお声をかけていただき出展につながりました。

Reflections from Hasumi, who participated as an invited artist
New Zealand is a land of stunning natural beauty and a unique Māori culture. This year, the theme of the international photography festival held there, the Auckland Festival of Photography, was “Sustain (tautīnei).”
The word “Sustain (tautīnei)” carries meanings such as “to support,” “to endure,” and “to persist,” while the Māori subtitle tautīnei conveys a more organic and cyclical perspective, symbolizing indigenous wisdom and coexistence with nature. I feel that “Sustain” is not just an environmental slogan, but a profound theme that asks us to reflect on the choices we make and how we face the future. Auckland Festival of Photography 2025 vividly presented, through photography as a “quiet language,” our position in the world and visions for the future we are to pursue. I am deeply honored that my work was selected as part of this dialogue.
Visiting the festival in person allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of why certain works are chosen and what an international photography festival truly represents. At the same time, forming new connections with festival organizers has become a valuable asset for me as an artist.
Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this invitation possible. I am especially thankful to Julia Durkin, the founder, and all the staff who warmly welcomed me, allowing me the opportunity to exhibit alongside renowned photographers at this prestigious international festival.

招待作家として参加した蓮見さんの感想
美しい自然と、マオリという独自の文化を持つニュージーランド。その地で開催された国際写真祭’Auckland Festival of Photography’の今年のテーマは、”Sustain（tautīnei”でした。
“Sustain（tautīnei）”には、「支える」「持続する」「耐える」といった意味があり、サブタイトルであるマオリ語の’tautīnei’には、より有機的で循環的な価値観が込められており、先住民の知恵と自然との共生を象徴しています。
“Sustain”は単なる環境保護のスローガンではなく、私たちが何を選び、どのように未来と向き合っていくかを問う、奥行きのあるテーマだと思います。Auckland Festival of Photography 2025は、写真という「静かな言語」を通して、私たちの立ち位置や、これから歩むべき未来へのビジョンを鮮やかに提示していました。 私の作品もそのためのひとつとして採用されたことに大変嬉しく思います。
また、実際にこの写真祭を訪れることで、「なぜ作品が選ばれたのか」や「国際写真祭とは」という問いにも、より深く理解を得ることができました。同時に写真祭の関係者の皆様と新しいつながりができたことは作家として貴重な財産となりました。
