The theme was conceived by Ann Trinca. In Mexico, there is a celebration called “Día de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead), which took place shortly after the exhibition period. This festival, which honors and remembers ancestors, is similar to Japan’s Obon tradition. Thus, the title “Offerings (Ofrendas)” was chosen to reflect this shared cultural practice between the two countries.

このテーマを考えたのはAnn Trincaさんです。メキシコには「死者の日」という祝祭があり、展覧会の開催期間直後がその日であるということ。また、それは日本のお盆の行事にも似て、先祖の供養をするという意味もあり、両国の習慣に繋がる「捧げもの」というタイトルになりました。

This is the statement written by Ann Trinca about the exhibition. It was printed on Ise washi, a handmade Japanese paper made from long-fibered kōzo (mulberry), with natural deckled edges, and displayed at the venue.

Located in the emerging arts district of Santa María la Ribera, SAQ Gallery is a unique space presenting interdisciplinary projects that engage with social, political, and aesthetic themes.

SAQギャラリーはメキシコシティのサンタ・マリア・ラ・リベラ地区にあります。新興のアート地区に位置するこのギャラリーは、社会的・政治的・美的テーマに関わる学際的なプロジェクトを展開する他にはない独自の存在です。

Beyond the entrance is the restaurant “XUVA’ experiencia culinaria”, which means “culinary experience.” This popular Mexican restaurant, known for its dishes created by a renowned chef, is owned by Sebastián, who is also a co-owner of the gallery. The gallery itself is located behind the white wall just beyond the slightly elevated seating area.

エントランスを抜けたところにあるのはレストラン”XUVA’ experiencia culinaria”。「美食体験」という意味で、著名なシェフがつくるお料理で人気のメキシカン・レストランです。ギャラリーの共同オーナーであるセバスティアンさんがオーナー。一段高い席の背後にある白壁がギャラリーです。

SAQ Gallery is a contemporary art space directed by Azalea Aguilar, Sebastián Monjaras, and Luis Fernando Suárez. It showcases both emerging and established artists from Mexico and around the world.

SAQギャラリーは、アゼリア・アギラール、セバスティアン・モンハラス、ルイス・フェルナンド・スアレスが共同で運営する現代アートスペースです。新進気鋭から確立されたメキシコ国内外のアーティストを紹介しています。

Azalea Aguilar has long served as a teacher of Spanish literature and art. Her father was a physician and politician who also established a hospital, giving her a wide network of connections. She worked with great energy and dedication to support this exhibition. Her husband, Oscar Aguilar, is a renowned painter.

Azalea Aguilarさんは長年、スペイン文学とアートを教える教師を務められていました。お父様は病院の設立も行なった医師であり政治家だったということで顔が広く、とても精力的にこの展覧会について動いてくださいました。ご主人のOscar Aguilarさんは著名な画家です。

This is the entrance to the café, located next to the gallery. With its solid construction and stylish façade facing the street, Ranzö Café y Libros is also a popular spot in Mexico City.

こちらはカフェのエントランス。ギャラリーの横にあります。重厚な造りで、通りに面したおしゃれなカフェテリア”Ranzö Café y libros”もメキシコシティで人気の場所です。

Inside the café, numerous books and paintings by Oscar Aguilar create an academic atmosphere. A pleasant breeze flows in from the street, and many guests waited here for the opening reception.

カフェの内部にはたくさんの書物やOscar Aguilarさんの絵画などが置かれていて、アカデミックな雰囲気。通りからの心地よい風が吹き抜けていました。オープニング・レセプションをここで待つ方も多くいらっしゃいました。

The exhibition officially opened with the opening reception on October 2 at 5:00 PM, but even before that, we were interviewed by numerous newspapers and online magazines.

The third project, “Message from Fukushima ― "Embracing Despair, Discovering Peace"― (2019– )”, features porThis is an interview with a widely read Mexican newspaper. Ann Trinca, Azalea Aguilar, and Mr. Yoshida all participated in the interview. It was published in the newspaper the following day.

The SAMURAI FOTO exhibition in Mexico was also featured in a video by the Mexican digital magazine POSTA. We were very pleased to be able to connect and share empathy with people in Mexico through photographic works across the ocean.

Two representatives from the Cultural Section of the Embassy of Japan in Mexico, Mr. Uchida and Ms. Otani, attended the exhibition. In Mr. Yoshida’s overseas exhibitions, it is common for embassy officials to be present, which truly gave us a sense of engaging in international cultural exchange.

在メキシコ日本大使館から文化部の、内田さん、尾谷さんのお二人が来てくださいました。吉田先生の海外での展覧会ではよく大使がお見えになりますが、国際交流している実感が湧いてきました。

When the green ribbon was cut by Mr. Uchida from the embassy, Ann Trinca, Azalea Aguilar, and members of SAMURAI FOTO, the exhibition officially opened, marking the start of the opening reception.

緑のテープを大使館の方、アンさん、アゼリアさん、 SAMURAI FOTOのメンバーでハサミを入れると、展覧会のオープン。同時にオープニング・レセプションのスタートです。

Ann Trinca arranged for Japanese songs to be performed at the opening reception, and hearing Japanese music in a foreign country made it even more moving. The guests from Mexico also listened attentively and were deeply engaged.

アンさんが日本の歌をオープニング・レセプションで聴いてもらいたいと手配してくださいましたが、異国で聞く日本の音楽はいつにも増して心に迫ってきます。メキシコの方も聞き入ってくださいました。

The elevated stage added a lovely touch to the performance. Yohei Sakai is a Japanese singer and choral conductor who began music education at the National Autonomous University of Mexico through a Japanese government program. He earned degrees in vocal performance and choral conducting in Canada. After returning to Mexico in 2022, he founded the Yoris Cuicatl Choir.

高いところにステージがあるのも素敵でした。境さんは日本の歌手兼合唱指揮者であり、日本政府の派遣でメキシコ国立自治大学で音楽教育を開始。カナダで声楽と合唱指揮の学位を取得。2022年にメキシコへ帰国後、ヨリスクイカトル合唱団を創設しました。

As soon as the exhibition opened, guests who had been waiting in the restaurant and café began to enter the gallery one after another. Their excitement was palpable, as if they were saying, “We’ve been waiting! We’ve been really looking forward to this!”

オープンと同時に、レストランやカフェで待っていらした方々が次々と会場に入ってきてくださいました。「待ってましたよー。すごく楽しみにしてましたよー」という気持ちがそのまま伝わってきました。

Perhaps because SAQ Gallery regularly hosts fascinating contemporary art exhibitions, the visitors were very attentive and engaged with our works. Many guests also asked detailed questions about the prints on washi paper.

つねに興味深い現代アートなどの展覧会を開催しているSAQギャラリーさんのせいか、ご来場のみなさんはとても熱心に私たちの作品をご覧になっていました。和紙へのプリントについての質問もとても多かったです。

We received many questions about Ise Washi, which provided most of the prints, paper, and wooden hangers for the exhibition.

At the venue, all participants’ postcards and booklets were distributed free of charge.

Here are the words from a staff member of the restaurant XUVA’ next to the gallery.
He was deeply moved by Mr. Onishi’s statement and felt compelled to share his impressions of the exhibition with the SAMURAI FOTO members in Japan.
