Message from Fukushima −− Finding hope and courages −−
福島からの伝言 −−　明日にかける橋　−−
Since March 11, 2011, I have continued to reflect— on the hardships of the survivors and what I can do as a photographer. After the disaster, I saw people praying across Japan. Prayer not only soothes wounded hearts but also creates hope. The government built a 14-meter-high, 400-kilometer-long seawall. Yet, it took away the beautiful sea from those who had lived with it. Was it hope or despair? I kept photographing the seawall. Ten years after the disaster, I began speaking with Fukushima’s survivors. Some rebuilt their lives, while others could never regain what was lost. Each had a story that could not be summed up by the word "survivor." Hope is born beyond suffering. "Only those who know the same pain can heal the wounded." That is what I believe.
2011年3月11日以来、私は考え続けてきました。 被災者の苦難、写真家として自分にできることを――。 震災後、日本各地で祈る人々の姿を目にしました。 祈りは心を癒し、希望を生み出す。 政府は高さ14メートル、総延長400キロの防潮堤を建設。 しかし、それは海と共に生きる人々から美しい海を奪いました。 希望なのか、絶望なのか――。 私は防潮堤を撮り続けました。 震災から10年。 福島の被災者に話を聞き始めました。 新たな生活を築いた人、失ったものが戻らない人――。 「被災者」という言葉では語り尽くせない物語がありました。 苦しみを超えた先に生まれる希望。 「傷ついた人を癒せるのは、同じ痛みを知る人だけ。」 私はそう感じています。

The sacred Trees on the earth
When I first encountered a large tree, I was overwhelmed by its size. However, I was simply astonished by its size and shape. But after a while, when I began to feel that it was not a "tree" but "life," my heart was transformed into a feeling of gratitude toward nature. It was a very happy feeling. At that moment, I decided to continue photographing these sacred big trees.

大きな木に初めて出会ったときは、その大きさに圧倒されていました。しかし、それは単純にその大きさや形に驚愕していただけでした。しかし、しばらくすると、それは「木」ではなく「命」だということを感じるようになったとき、私の心は自然に対して感謝する気持ちに変わりました。それはとても幸福感のある気持ちでした。そのとき、この撮影を続けようと決心しました。
