Thanks to Cosmos International, the workshop was held at a meeting room in Tokyo. Not only did all the participants wear face masks but we also disinfected our hands with alcohol. We kept social distancing with each other and ventilated the room with extreme care.
(株)コスモスインターナショナルさんの全面的なご協力で都内の会議室にて開催。全員マスク着用はもちろんのこと、参加者の皆さんにもご協力いただいてアルコール消毒と着席状況、換気に最大限の配慮をしました。

The employees of Cosmos International prepared two printers for the workshop from EPSON. We used printer SC-PX5VΙΙ for the trial printing and the latest printer which will be released at the beginning of July were there for display purpose.
コスモスさんのご手配により、エプソンのプリンタを準備。SC-PX5VΙΙはプリント体験会で使用。7月上旬に新発売されるSC-PX1V (A3ノビ) は展示品として皆さんに見ていただきました。

The printing paper was provided by Pictran as well. These two printing papers, Pictran Kyokushi and Pictran Kyokushi Baryta, are good for creating monochrome tones and clearing black color of the picture. They have been noted for their high color reproducibility and unique texture as Japanese printing paper.
プリント用紙もコスモスインターナショナルのご手配で、ピクトランさんから局紙と局紙バライタをご提供いただきました。これらの用紙はモノクロの階調性と黒の締まりの良さが特徴。高い色再現性と独特のテクスチャで定評のある日本製の用紙です。

Kiyoshi Niiyama left a lot of photographs called subjective photography. Yoichi Niiyama, a son of Kiyoshi and a president of Cosmos International, possesses so many of Kiyoshi’s works and showed us a selection of them this time.
新山清さんは主観主義写真と呼ばれる作品をたくさん残されました。その膨大なプリントを所有する新山洋一さん(ご子息でありコスモスインターナショナル社長)からたくさんの作品を見せていただきました。

Subjective photography is created artworks with a personal perspective. It is focused on the artist’s unique ideas and thoughts. Kiyoshi actually took a very long time before shooting. That’s why the composition was well thought out and the artworks became unique creations.
主観主義写真とは作者の独特の視点と思想で切り取られています。実際に新山清さんは撮影するまでとても時間をかけていたそうで、だからこそ考え抜いた唯一無二の構図が生み出されたようです。

Most of his vintage prints were taken 50 or 60 years ago. He printed them out as soon as the shooting was finished. We were all impressed by the beauty of the silver salt print, which was different from the digital one.
新山清さんのビンテージプリントは50年、60年前にプリントされたものがほとんど。撮影からあまり間を置かずにブリントされている。デジタルプリントとは異なる銀塩プリントの素晴らしさを生で味わえました。

Chiyoda, who is a contract photographer of Art Photo Area in Italy, showed her artworks at the workshop. Some of her artworks are permanently stored in MOPA in the U.S. Her photographs printed on washi paper received a high esteem and she explained how she created her artworks.
イタリアのギャラリーArt Photo Area契約作家でアメリカのアート写真美術館MOPAに永久保存されている千代田さんの作品。高い評価を受けている和紙のプリントがどのように出来上がるのかを公開してくれました。

The past 3 projects, she had created monochrome artworks from color prints. Chiyoda tried many kinds of paper, reselected one another, compared them through enough and then decided which to use. She showed us all the way of process.
これまで3つのプロジェクトはモノクロになる前のカラープリントからどのような用紙を選んでテストプリントを繰り返し、さらに紙を選び直して再検討し、とことんまで比較してから決めた過程までを見せてくれました。

Also, she showed us her latest project in progress. No matter how much money and time she spends, she can’t be satisfied with the artwork until she sees the actual prints, said she. We think she is a real pro.
制作途中の最新プロジェクトのプリントの過程もすべて見せてくれました。これだけ時間とお金をかけても、実際にプリントしてみないと納得できないというのが作家らしさだと感じられました。

The difference between the two printers, SC-PX1V (right) and SC-PX5VΙΙ (left) is the weight and the design. Right one is lighter and compact. As the new printer got new inks and the black ink got better. The paper feed is improved, too. It can be used up to 500 microns thick and loaded the paper in the center of the rear tray. The paper is loaded flat and when it’s printed, the deflection is reduced.
SC-PX1V(右)とSC-PX5VΙΙc(左)の違いは軽量コンパクト設計。新インク搭載により黒インクの改善。用紙送り機構が改善されセンターローディングになり500ミクロン厚まで後ろトレイから可能に。フラットローディングで印字最終時のたわみが改善されました。

The result of detailed validation of color measurement by using Ci6X and i1Pro, the integrating sphere spectrophotometer of X-rite company, which was led by Tomikawa from the company and Kojima, a printing director from Teppan, it was proved that blue color gamut and expressive power of black color was expanded. It’s the result of measurement and plot of 256 colors.
X-Rite社の冨川さんとトッパンのブリンティングディレクター小島さんより、X-rite社の積分球分光側色計Ci6xとi1 PRO3 PLUSを使って詳細に検証。256色側色してプロットするなどした結果、青の色域が広がり、黒が表現が広がったことが証明されました。

In black and white photographs, it often changes colors while using ICC profile. So we set the appropriate printer driver and print. But according to Tomikawa and Kojima’s verification, a new possibility of monochrome printing with ICC profile created by M3 measurement of l1 Pro3 PLUS was introduced.
モノクロプリントはICCプロファイルを使うと色が転ぶことが多くプリンタドライバを選んで印刷していましが、冨川さんと小島さんの検証からi1 Pro3 PLUSのM3測定（偏光フィルター）で作られたICCプロファイルでのモノクロプリントの新たな可能性が紹介されました。

Yoshida told what was necessary to be hold exhibitions at museums overseas. From the first contact through the internet, it’s already needed to list these items; the title, file number, size of the photo, edition, the shooting date and the printing date.
海外の美術館で展示に際して必要なことについて教えていただきました。タイトルとファイルナンバー、サイズ、エディション、撮影日、プリント日など。Web上での最初のやり取りですでにこれらの細かな項目が必要とされる。

He demonstrated how to convert monochrome print into color print using Photoshop. There are two other ways of printing out for color printing; convert the color data into black and white with printer driver and add the color tone or use Photoshop to convert the color into monochrome and add the color tone by printer driver.
Photoshopでモノクロ変換してカラーとして出力。カラーデータのままプリンタドライバでモノクロ変換と色調付け。Photshopでモノクロ変換しプリンタドライバで色調付け。3つの出力ルートがある。

Yoshida chose Photoshop and converted the color into black and white. And then selected the sky part of the photo, converted the density of the color and toning the color by Silver Efex Pro3 of Nik. He says he takes care to ensure that the colors of the photo look the same within the same project and on the web site.
吉田先生はPhotoshopの色調を選んでモノクロ化。その後、画像の空など部分を選んで濃度変換。NikのSilver Efex Pro3でトーニング。とくにWeb上や同じプロジェクト内で色調が違わないように気を付けているという。

With SAMURAI FOTO member’s help, all the participants enjoyed printing their own image data with SC-PX5VΙΙ. They could bring the prints that they printed back home. It was a valuable opportunity to be together and show each other’s prints. We are very thankful to all the participants to come and join us. Thank you so much.
