Ann gave an idea for the title of our group exhibition, “Seeing Spirit in Nature”. The exhibition will be held next spring in March in San Fransisco. Also, we held the same exhibition in Roppongi. One week before the event, she gave us a portfolio review.
After working for art-related museums and art galleries for 22 years in San Fransisco, she became an artist consultant. She’s been working on making marketing materials, coordinating exhibitions, branding, fundraising, and doing artist statement lessons.
She will curate our future group exhibitions in the Bay Area.

来春3月に決定しているサンフランシスコでのグループ展 “Seeing spirit in nature”のタイトルを考えてくださったアン・トリンカさん。同じタイトルで1週間後から六本木で開催されるSAMURAI FOTO展を前に、ポートフォリオレビューをしていただきました。
アンさんはサンフランシスコのアート関連の博物館やギャラリーなどで22年活動したあと、アーティストのコンサルタントとしてマーケティング資料の作成、展示会のコーディネイトやブランディング、資金調達を専門とし、アーティストステートメントの指導など指導されています。
今後のベイエリアでのSAMURAI FOTOの展覧会もキュレーションしていただくことになりました。

2023年の初の試みを公開
This is a photo of our artwork. We will show this at the exhibition in Stripes Space
(Web page) from October 2nd to 8th, 2023. We made the artwork with all of the SAMURAI FOTO members. We chose two artworks from Hokusai Katsushika's "Fugaku Sanjurokkei” to create the mosaic photographs for the exhibition.
2023年10月2～8日にストライプズ・スペース( 六本木 Link )開催されるSAMURAI FOTO展で展示される全員参加の作品。葛飾北斎の『富嶽三十六景』の中から今回2点を制作しました。
Ann recognized "Kanagawa Okinami Ura" and "Gaifu Kaisei" at her first glance. She thought it was a great idea that we made the mosaic photographs with the photographs of contemporary Japan, and she liked the Ise washi paper which was very suitable for the atmosphere of the exhibition.
『神奈川沖波裏』と『凱風快晴』はアンさんも一目でわかってくださいました。現代の日本を写したそれぞれの写真をコラージュした合作はとてもいいアイディアで、伊勢和紙へのプリントも雰囲気が合っているとのことでした。
The review was very specific and polite.
とても具体的で丁寧だったレビュー
Even though Ann was on vacation, she graciously agreed to do the portfolio review for us. Seven members of SAMURAI FOTO brought the prints of their several projects from the past and the present and showed them to Ann. Of course, they did the presentation all in English.
日本を旅行中のアンさんに急遽お願いしたので全員は集まれませんでしたが、佐々木一弘さんほか6名が過去から現在までいくつかのプロジェクトのプリントを持って集まりました。もちろん、英語でのレビューです。
Motoko Sato explained the concept of her project to Ann in her own words. Ann understood how hard Motoko had worked and gave a good comment on Motoko’s artworks. Motoko handed her small photo book to Ann, and she was very happy to get the present.
佐藤素子さんは自分の言葉でアンさんに丁寧にコンセプトを語っていました。その一生懸命さはアンさんにも伝わり、とても丁寧にコメントをしてくださいました。お土産の手作りの小さな写真集もとても喜んでくれました。
Hiroaki Hasumi, a representative of SAMURAI FOTO, has lived abroad and has a lot of experience in portfolio reviews. As he speaks English very well, his portfolio review went smoothly.
SAMURAI FOTO会長の蓮見浩明さんは海外生活も経験していて、ポートフォリオレビューの経験も豊富。慣れた英語でコミュニケーションを取りながらのレビューの進め方はさすがでした。
Aiko Koizumi is a new member of SAMURAI FOTO. It was her first time to join the portfolio review and couldn’t bring her prints. So, she showed her photographs on a computer. Fortunately, her passion for the art came across. Ann advised Aiko that as her photos were very good, it was better to show a clear concept for her artwork.
小泉あい子さんは入会したばかりでプリントを用意できませんでしたが、画像をパソコンでプレゼンしました。それでも熱意は伝わり、写真はとてもいいので、あとは明確なコンセプトを持つといいとアドバイスされました。
This is a photo of our break time. Aiko brought some sweets from Kamakura and Motoko brought some homemade sweets. We all enjoyed the teatime together. This is how we always make connections with curators from overseas, which is a tip for long-lasting friendships with them.
レビューの合い間の休憩時間。小泉さん持参の鎌倉のお菓子と佐藤素子さんの手作りのお菓子でお茶タイム。いつもこのようにして海外のキュレーターさんたちの繋がりをつくっているので長いのお付き合いができています。
Koji Sasaki showed two projects that he will exhibit this time. He explained his artist statement. His way of shooting is unique, and he was relieved that Ann understood his purpose of the photography, even in English.
佐々木浩二さんは今回の写真展に出展する2つのプロジェクトを見せながら、アーティスト・ステートメントを説明しました。ユニークな撮影の作品ですが、その意図が英語でも伝わって安心していました。
While Shigeru Yoshida showed all his promotional videos, telling the concepts and showing the prints. Since he has been through a lot of portfolio reviews, his way of speaking in English is very good and impressive.
吉田繁先生はこれまでの全部のプロジェクトについて、プロモーションビデオを見せ、コンセプトを語りながらプリントを見せました。何度もレビューを受けているのでさすがの英語力、説得力でした。
Setsuko Kanie showed her project videos that will be shown in Roppongi and San Francisco next spring. She asked Ann the impressions. Both of Setsuko and Ann are coaches on how to write artist statements, they got along very well, and it was such a fruitful time.
蟹江節子さんは六本木と来春のサンフランシスコで上映予定の映像作品を見てもらい、アンさんに感想を聞きました。また、アーティスト・ステートメントを教える者同士として有意義な意見交換ができました。
