Meeting with Ann Trinca about the SAMURAI FOTO Exhibition in Mexico City

Thanks to the initiative of San Francisco–based curator Ann Trinca, SAMURAI FOTO will hold a group exhibition at SAQ Gallery in Mexico City from October 2 to 30, 2025.
Since the dates coincide with Mexico’s famous festival Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), the exhibition will be presented under the theme “OFFERINGS”. Just as Japan’s Obon welcomes the spirits of ancestors, this exhibition creates a space to reflect on traditions of honoring the departed. Through this shared sensibility, we aim to exchange perspectives on unique customs, cultural practices, and art from both countries over the course of this month-long exhibition.
Beyond curating, Ann has been deeply involved in every aspect of the project—from fundraising and artwork transport to arranging musicians for the opening ceremony. She even traveled to Japan to help with artwork selection and design meetings in person.

サンフランシスコ在住のキュレーター、アン・トリンカさんの企画により、2025年10月2日から30日にメキシコシティにあるSAQギャラリーでSAMURAI FOTOのグループ展を開催することになりました。
メキシコの有名なお祭り「死者の日」に近いことから、何かに捧げるという意味の”OFFERINGS”(捧げもの)がテーマです。
メキシコの「死者の日」は日本のお盆と同じく、先祖などが還ってくる日。亡くなった人を大切にする文化や気持ちを通じて、お互いの国にしかない風物や習慣、アートについて語り合う1カ月の展覧会となります。
企画やキュレーションだけでなく、資金調達から作品の輸送やオープニングセレモニーの音楽家の手配など細かくやってくださっているアンさんだけに、作品のセレクトとデザイナーとの打ち合わせも来日して対応してくださいました。

From the participating artists’ bodies of work, Ann made a selection, which designer Toshiaki Yamauchi used as the basis for drafting the exhibition layout. From there, the final installation will be shaped step by step, taking various considerations into account.
まず出展作家の作品群の中から、アンさんが作品をセレクトし、それを基にデザイナー山内俊明さんが会場のレイアウトのドラフトを考案。そこから諸々を考慮しながら実際の展示をつくり上げていきます。
Decisions include which works to print large and which to keep smaller, the size and shape of the statement boards, and whether to present them only in Spanish or with English as well. Another important point is ensuring that the overall flow of the exhibition aligns with the theme. There are many such items on the checklist.
プリントサイズではどの作品を大きくしてどの作品を小さくするか。ステートメントボードのサイズや形、スペイン語にするか英語も併記するか。全体の流れがテーマに沿っているかどうか。チェック項目は多岐にわたります。
As we worked through various adjustments, we sometimes found ourselves going back to the initial artwork selection. Since the gallery does not provide rental frames, we discussed whether to bring them from Japan―which would be quite difficult―or to find alternative ways to create a unified and cohesive presentation.
さまざまなことを擦り合わせていくうちに、最初の作品のセレクトまで戻る場合もあります。また、ギャラリーにはレンタルのフレームがないため、日本から持ち込むのか。それだと大変なので全体的に統一感を持たせながら、どう展示するかなどをよく話し合いました。
Reviewing the exhibition works in print
展示作品をプリントでレビュー
For the first round of curation, Ann reviewed image data remotely since she is based in San Francisco. On this day, however, she viewed the works in a portfolio review format, together with the artists’ statements and prints. The featured work was “Oshichi” by Michiko Chiyoda.
1回目のキュレーションはアンさんがサンフランシスコ在住のため画像データを済ませました。なので、この日はポートフォリオレビュー形式で、アーティストステートメントとプリントを見ていただきました。作品は千代田路子さんの『お七』。
The exhibition theme, “Offerings,” was easy for us Japanese artists to engage with. The title was thoughtfully chosen by Ann, reflecting the shared tradition in both Japan and Mexico of honoring ancestors and deceased family members.
日本語で『捧げもの』という展覧会のテーマは私たち日本人にとっては取り組みやすいものでした。これはアンさんが日本とメキシコに共通する先祖や亡くなった家族を大切に思うという習慣を意識して考えたタイトルです。。
For members who had just joined and had never participated in a portfolio review, this was a valuable opportunity. The 20-minute session, conducted just like a real review, allowed them to learn a great deal in preparation for future reviews, which they found very rewarding.
まだ入会したてで、ポートフォレオレビューを受けたことのないメンバーにはとてもいい機会になりました。実際のレビューと同じ20分のセッションは今後、実際のレピューを受けるときのために多くのことを吸収できたと喜んでいました。
Some members took the opportunity to have Ann review not only their prints for the Mexico exhibition but also their new works. Attentive as always, Ann carefully examined all of Motoko Sato’s pieces and provided thoughtful, detailed feedback.
メキシコ展用のプリントだけでなく、ご自分の新作についても見ていただくメンバーも……。きめ細やかなアンさんは佐藤素子さんのすべての作品をちゃんと見て、丁寧なアドバイスもしてくださいました。
Hiroyasu Sato’s work is based on sketches by his daughter, who passed away suddenly. Given the deeply personal and tragic experience behind the pieces, Ann praised them highly, noting that there are few works that move viewers’ hearts as profoundly.
佐藤裕保さんの作品は急に亡くなったお嬢さんのスケッチを元にしたもの。逆縁というとても悲しいご自身の体験が込められていますから、これほど見るものの心に迫る作品はないと、アンさんも大絶賛でした。
As usual, Murata’s works, printed on Japanese paper in a traditional Japanese painting style, truly need to be seen in print to convey their essence. Ann was deeply impressed by Murata’s technique and artistic style.
村田さんはいつものように日本画風で和紙にプリントした作品。これはやはり、プリントで見てもらわないと感じが伝わりません。アンさんも村田さんのテクニックや作風に感動されていました。
Hitoshi Sato is also a newly joined member, and this was his first portfolio review as well as his first experience exhibiting abroad. Despite limited time, he prepared both his statement and prints with great effort. His bird-themed work will be displayed suspended from the ceiling.
佐藤均さんも入会したてのメンバーであり、ポートフォリオレビューも海外での展示も初めてです。時間のないところでステートメントもプリントも頑張りました。鳥がモチーフの作品は天井から吊るすことになりました。
Kazuhiro Sasaki’s project traces the memories of his late father, photographing places they visited together. Ann noted that the theme―reflecting on his father’s thoughts, which he had never fully understood, and exploring his own feelings then and now―is highly relatable and well conveyed through his work.
亡き父の思いを辿りながら、一緒に出かけた思い出の地を撮影した佐々木一弘さんのプロジェクト。理解できないままだった父の思いを想像したり、その当時と現在の自分の心を紐解くような作品はアンさんにもよく理解できるテーマだということでした。
Mariko Masumoto, based in Kobe, also participated in the review via Zoom. English interpretation was provided remotely by Yukiko Shikama, the wife of Takeshi Shikama. Seeing the prints and having direct conversations helped deepen mutual understanding and proved essential for shaping the exhibition successfully.
神戸在住の升本真理子さんもzoomでレビュー。また、英語の通訳もzoomで、志鎌猛さんの奥様の志鎌由紀子さんにお願いしました。プリントを見ていただいたり、直にお話しできることは相互理解を深め、展覧会をいい形にするためにはとても大切なことだと実感しました。

Over the course of two days, Ann generously devoted her time to detailed discussions about the exhibition. Spending more time together like this promises to make cultural exchange abroad an even richer and more meaningful experience.
2日間に亘って、展覧会の細かな打ち合わせを含めてアンさんにはお時間をいただきました。でも、ご一緒にする時間が増えていくことで、海外での文化交流もまたよく濃い体験になりそうです。
Sharing meals in a relaxed setting provides an ideal opportunity for members who are not yet comfortable with English to practice conversational skills. This is likely why Deborah remarked, “SAMURAI has improved both in their work and in English communication.”
お食事をご一緒しながらの和やかな時間を過ごすことは、英語に慣れないメンバーにとっては英会話コミュニケーションを学ぶ格好の場です。デポラさんにも「SAMURAIは作品と英会話コミュニケーションがimproveしたね」と言われる理由はこんなところにあるのでしょう。
